Overview

Data communication and IT Information exchange is becoming an increasingly important part of people's lives fueling growth in data communications and IT infrastructure. Business Data Communications & IT Infrastructures focuses on a core set of technologies and why they have been designed to work the way they do providing students the skills they will need within the first five years of their careers and the insight they will need to continue to advance their knowledge throughout their careers. This version features a custom virtual machine laboratory that facilitates flexibility in the delivery of the course in either an in-person, online, or hybrid format.

Features

Problem-first approach
In developing this textbook, we thought through the essential tasks that students will be expected to perform when they enter the technology workforce. Your students will start with the basics and build up the core set of data communications and IT infrastructure knowledge and skills needed to accomplish these tasks competently.

Hands-on exercises
Students cement their understanding with hands-on exercises in every chapter.

Focus on the "why" regarding core technologies.
Understanding why technologies work the way they do helps students retain knowledge and creatively apply concepts with the larger goal of efficient and effective resource utilization. The focus on "why" serves as a unifying theme for the textbook. To enhance this goal, analogies are regularly employed to further an overarching understanding of concepts and their inter-relationships. To further this goal, a critical thinking exercise accompanies each chapter.

Explore business use cases
Students explore the business use for the technologies in a detailed case at the end of each chapter. Additionally, a threaded enterprise IT infrastructure design case runs throughout the book integrating insights across chapters.

Testimonials

"I like just about everything! The students love it too. I have used the book multiple times and it works well."
-- Dr. Amrit Tiwana, University of Georgia

"It is logically organized and allows the students to build on their knowledge from chapter to chapter. The hands-on exercises, for the most part, allow the students to practice what they have learned to reinforce the concepts."
-- Dr. Mark Stone, University of Massachusetts Boston

"The sections on the OSI and TCP/IP models are my favorite part of the book. The explanations are accessible and lots of analogies are given to help the new student relate to them."
-- Professor Roger Zimmerman, Portland Community College

"The book is well written for people who aren't interested in the purely technical side of things (like passing a certification exam). The stories/histories/anecdotes about the topics make them relatable and interesting."
--Professor Degan Kettles, Brigham Young University

"The book's level of detail is perfect as an introductory text, and its use of Cisco terminology prepares students for advanced courses. I especially like its structural approach to start at the physical layer and move upwards which allows students to fully learn simple networks before moving into internetworks."
--Professor Andrew Tokash, Marist College
